New-Zealand Southern Island – Nouvelle Zélande, l’île du Sud

As we arrive in Picton, we start our visit of the Southern Island with a look at the Edwin Fox, the 9th oldest ship in the world. It had a long life, from troop carrier to immigrant ship, even convict transporter. The cabins are not so big for a several month trip!

En arrivant à Picton, nous entamons notre visite de l’île du Sud en allant faire un tour sur le Edwin Fox, le 9e plus vieux bateau au monde. Il a eu une longue vie: transport de troupes, bateau d’immigrants, transport de prisonniers… Les cabines n’étaient pas bien grandes pour une traversée de plusieurs mois!

We continue our museum day with the visit of the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre of Blenheim. There are a lot of airplanes, displayed in context, it is a really nice collection.

Nous poursuivons notre journée des musées avec la visite du centre d’aviation Omaka de Blenheim. On y voit de nombreux avions, présentés dans leur contexte, c’est vraiment une belle collection.

The next day, we head to one of the must-sees of the Southern Island: Abel Tasman Park. In the morning, we take a taxi boat to reach the heart of the park.

Le lendemain, on s’attaque à un des must de l’île du Sud: le parc Abel Tasman. Le matin, on prend un bateau taxi pour rejoindre le coeur du parc.

The sand is very yellow here, and the place is therefore called the golden coast.

Le sable est très jaune ici, et du coup l’endroit est appelé la côte d’or.

Once we have disembarked from the boat, it’s time to walk, we have 20 km to hike to go back to the entrance of the park.

Une fois débarqués du bateau, c’est parti pour 20 km de rando le long de la côte.

The views are great all along.

Les vues sur la côte sont magnifique tout du long.

The lush vegetation makes the walk really enjoyable.

La végétation luxuriante rend la promenade très agréable.

New-Zealanders like to leave some natural messages.

Les néo-zélandais aiment bien laisser des messages très nature.

Next destination: Hokitika, on the coast. We have a very nice house for the night.

Prochaine destination: Hokitika, sur la côte. On a une très jolie maison pour la nuit.

And we are just a few meters away from the beach, perfect to go running.

Et on est à quelques pas de la plage, parfait pour aller courir.

As we continue towards the South, we reach Franz Josef glacier.

En poursuivant vers le Sud, on arrive vers le glacier Franz Josef.

Once again, everything is very organized and marked, and you can’t go really close to the glacier because it could maybe become a little bit dangerous at some point.

Encore une fois, tout est très organisé et balisé, et on ne peut pas s’approcher du glacier au cas où ça deviendrait éventuellement dangereux à un moment.

Anyway, we have a good time there!

Quoi qu’il en soit, on passe un bon moment!

And a nice barbecue with new-zeland meat and wine, it couldn’t be better.

After a night in Queenstown, we hit the road to another must-see: Milford Sound.

Après une nuit à Queenstown, on prend la route vers un autre site à ne pas manquer: Milford Sound.

To see the fjord from closer, we go on a boat cruise.

Pour aller voir le fjord de plus près, on prend un bateau.

Des otaries toutes mimi qui s’amusent bien ou se dorent au soleil

And the unexpected cherry on the cake: a whole shoal of dolphins coming to swim near our boat all along the way back from the sea to the inner fjord. They are so close we can almost touch them, it’s unbelievable. It’s really moving to see these beautiful creatures so free and so close to us.

Et le clou du spectacle, qui en plus n’était pas prévu: un banc de dauphins rejoint notre bateau et nous accompagne sur tout le chemin du retour de la mer vers l’intérieur du fjord. Ils sont tellement proches qu’on peut presque les toucher. C’est vraiment émouvant de voir ces créatures majestueuses si libres et si proches de nous.

The next day, back in the inner land, we go for a walk along the Manapouri lake.

Le lendemain, de retour dans l’intérieur des terres, on va se balader le long du lac Manapouri.

And then along the Te Anau lake. They do have a lot of lakes!

Puis le long du lac Te Anau. Ils ont vraiment beaucoup de lacs dans cette région!

And then it’s time to head back North.

Puis il est temps de retourner vers le Nord.

We see a lot of sheep on the way and some road signs indicate that our beloved Icebreaker merino clothes are made from the wool of sheep from this area.

On croise beaucoup de moutons sur la route et des panneaux nous indiquent que nos vêtements Icebreaker préférés en mérino sont fait avec la laine de moutons de cette région.

There is also a lot of agriculture thanks to huge irrigation systems.

Il y a aussi beaucoup d’agriculture grâce à des systèmes d’irrigation gigantesques.

Last but not least, Mount Cook / Aoraki and the surrounding turquoise blue lakes. Breath-taking!

Dernière étape mais pas des moindres, le mont Cook / Aoraki, et les lacs bleu turquoise aux alentours. A couper le souffle!

If you climb a bit you can see the glaciers melting down into icebergs.

En grimpant un peu on peut voir les glaciers qui fondent en icebergs.

And more lakes: below, Tekapo lake.

Et encore des lacs: ci-dessous le lac Tekapo.

What a country, what a country! We really saw some amazing wonders from nature, and we can’t get bored with looking at the pictures over and over again. A nice discovery in our great adventure, that we were happy to share with Claire and Xavier, thanks for visiting us on the other side of the world and for the great planning of these 2 weeks :-).

Quel pays, quel pays! On en a vraiment pris plein les yeux et on ne se lasse pas de regarder les photos. Une bien belle découverte dans notre grande aventure, que nous sommes ravis d’avoir partagée avec Claire et Xavier, merci de nous avoir rendu visite à l’autre bout du monde et pour l’organisation sans faille de ces 2 semaines :-).

Auckland, Sydney, Santiago: 3 main cities in 3 days – 3 grandes villes en 3 jours

Before leaving New-Zealand for good, we have one last day to spend in Auckland (we flew from Christchurch to Auckland early morning). We go for a walk around the city.

Avant de quitter la Nouvelle-Zélande pour de bon, nous avons un dernier jour à passer à Auckland (on a pris un avion tôt le matin de Christchurch à Auckland). On part se balader à pied pour découvrir la ville.

Here, jumping from the tower is a big attraction. Look carefully and you will see one guy jumping in the picture below.

Ici, l’attraction locale consiste à sauter d’en haut de la tour. Regardez bien, vous verrez un petit bonhomme en train de sauter dans la photo en dessous.

A place that we like: in the harbor, a big hall, probably used to organize receptions, is converted into a giant game room.

Un endroit qui nous plait bien: sur le port, une grande salle, sans doute pour organiser des réceptions, est aménagée en terrain de jeu géant.

Le bateau neo-zélandais qui a gagné la coupe de l’America.

The harbor district is a nice area to hang out.

Le quartier du port est très sympa pour se balader.

More down town, it’s nice as well.

Plus dans le centre, c’est sympa aussi.

And to end things right, we are lucky to go and see the rugby game at the Eden Park!

Et pour finir en beauté, on a la chance de pouvoir aller voir un match de rugby à l’Eden Park!

Claire, a big rugby fan, is thrilled.

After goodbyes, another night in the Auckland airport Mac Donalds, an almost missed wake-up at 4 am (thank you to the French couple who woke us up) and a 3 hour flight, here we are Australia!!! Ok, we have only one day, but it’s better than nothing, it’s almost on the way to South America, and the airplane tickets were much cheaper this way, so here is our chance to see the Sydney opera.

First, we meet these strange birds who are all over the parks in Sydney.

Après s’être dit au-revoir, une autre nuit au mac do de l’aéroport d’Auckland, un réveil à 4h du matin presque raté (merci au couple de Français qui nous ont réveillés) et un vol de 3 heures, Australie, nous voilà!!! Ok, on n’a qu’un jour, mais c’est mieux que rien, c’est presque sur la route de l’Amérique du Sud, et les billets d’avion étaient beaucoup moins chers comme ça, donc voilà notre chance de voir l’opéra de Sydney.

On commence par rencontrer ces drôles d’oiseaux qui sont partout dans les parcs à Sydney.

A stop in 7 eleven – feels like home – to have a laaaaaaaaarge coffee that we badly need and to read a little bit about the city and what we can see there. Thank you Australian tourist office for making things so easy with the airport free brochures suggesting nice walking tours!

Petite pause au 7 eleven, histoire de ne pas être trop dépaysés, de prendre un graaaaaaaaaaaaaaand café – on en a bien besoin – et pour lire un peu ce qu’il y a à voir dans la ville. Merci l’office du tourisme australien pour rendre les choses si faciles avec les itinéraires de découverte de la ville proposés dans les brochures qu’on a récupérées à l’aéroport!

And here we go!

Et c’est parti!

Yoga festival at the park, really relaxed atmosphere, and everybody is welcome to join: women, men, kids… People seem to have less hang-ups here than in France.

Festival de yoga au parc, ambiance très détendue, et tout le monde est le bienvenu: femmes, hommes, enfants… Les gens semblent moins complexés ici qu’en France.

The botanic gardens. Another nice area, where you are welcome to “hug the trees” and “walk on the grass”. People do have a different mindset here!

Les jardins botaniques. Un autre endroit très sympa, où on est invités par un panneau à l’entrée à “caliner les arbres” et “marcher sur la pelouse”. Les mentalités sont bien différentes ici!

And here we are, at the Sydney opera house! It really is a one-of-a-kind building.

Et nous y voilà, l’opéra de Sydney! C’est vraiment un bâtiment unique en son genre.

We go all around the bay, it’s a very pleasant area.

On fait tout le tour de la baie, c’est un coin très plaisant.

The bridge crossing the bay is quite impressive as well.

Le pont qui traverse la baie est impressionnant aussi.

And a bit more walking through the city back to our hotel. What a day!

Et encore un petit tour dans la ville pour rentrer jusqu’à notre hôtel. Quelle journée!

Another 13 hours flight, and a crossing of the international date line later, here we are in South America, Santiago!! New continent, new country, new people. We first meet a great family who welcomes us with yummy chilean-salmon sushis for our first night in the city: Frédéric, Juanita and their daughter Amélie.

Un autre vol de 13 heures et une traversée de la ligne de changement de date plus tard, nous arrivons en Amérique du Sud, à Santiago!! Nouveau continent, nouveau pays, nouvelles rencontres. Nous commençons par faire la connaissance d’une famille en or qui nous accueille avec de délicieux sushis au saumon chilien pour notre première nuit dans la ville: Frédéric, Juanita et leur fille Amélie.

The next day, big day, it’s time to meet again our beloved motorbike waiting for us in the airport cargo area 🙂

Le lendemain, grand jour, ce sont les retrouvailles avec notre moto adorée qui nous attend à l’aéroport dans le coin des cargos 🙂

A little effort is required to get it out of its wooden crate. Luckily, Nico is here to help us, he arrived a few days before us to ride with us for one month South-America.

Ca demande un peu d’effort pour la sortir de sa caisse en bois. Heureusement, Nico est là pour nous aider, il est arrivé quelques jours avant nous pour rouler avec nous en Amérique du Sud pendant un mois.

But inside, it is like new, nothing has moved, and Guillaume recovers his smile lost at the crate maker in Kuala Lumpur!

Mais à l’intérieur tout est intact, et Guillaume retrouve le sourire qu’il avait perdu chez le fabricant de caisse à Kuala Lumpur!

Then we need to put back on the bike everything we had dismantled to reduce the volume of the crate.

Ensuite il faut remonter sur la moto tout ce qu’on avait démonté pour réduire le volume de la caisse.

Here we are, ready to hit the road again! The adventure goes on…

Ça y est, parés à reprendre la route! L’aventure continue…

New-Zealand Northern island – Nouvelle-Zélande, l’île du Nord

We reach Auckland after a long day flying from Singapore. It is 1:30 am here, so we finish our night on the mac donalds bench seats, that turn out to be surprisingly comfortable!

Bien arrivés à Auckland après une longue journée de vol depuis Singapour. Il est 1h30 du matin heure locale, du coup on termine notre nuit sur la banquette du mac do… qui est finalement plutôt confortable!

Early morning, Claire & Xavier (my parents) join us, after almost 2 days of travel from Paris. Guillaume is happy to see his mum and dad in law again, and of course I’m really happy to see them too.

Tôt le matin, Claire & Xavier (mes parents) nous rejoignent, après presque 2 jours de voyage depuis Paris, Guillaume est content de retrouver sa belle maman et son beau papa, et bien sûr je suis bien contente de les retrouver aussi.

And here we are, we go from 4 feet to 8…

Et voilà, on passe de 4 pieds à 8…

… and from 2 wheels to 4. We would have loved to take the bike with us, but the process to import your vehicle into New-Zealand is very complicated and expensive, so for 2 weeks it is not worth the hassle.

… et de 2 roues à 4! On aurait bien pris la moto avec nous, mais c’est très compliqué et onéreux d’importer son véhicule en Nouvelle-Zélande, donc pour 2 semaines ça ne vaut pas la peine de se casser la tête.

We start our visit of the Northern island by driving to Coromandel, on a peninsula in the East of Auckland. The weather is not the best, but we enjoy the cooler temperature, and the views are still great.

On entame notre visite de l’île du Nord par Coromandel, sur une péninsule à l’est d’Auckland. Le temps n’est pas parfait, mais on apprécie de retrouver des températures un peu plus fraîches, et les paysages sont quand même sublimes.

Hot water beach, a beach with hot springs below the sand. If you dig a hole in the ground you can take a hot bath, it’s quite nice.

La plage de l’eau chaude, une plage avec des sources chaudes sous le sable. En creusant un trou on peut prendre un bain chaud, sympa.

We continue with a small hike to cathedral cove. We feel very small in these huge natural spaces.

On poursuit avec une petite rando jusqu’à Cathedral cove. On se sent tout petits face à ces grands espaces de nature.

Next destination: Rotorua, famous for its volcanic activity. Below, a geyser.

Prochaine destination: Rotorua, célèbre pour son activité volcanique. Ci-dessous, un geyser.

There is much more to see in the park, bubbling mud, incredible colors from the minerals, we had never seen such a thing.

Il y a bien plus à voir dans le parc, des boues en ébullitions, et d’incroyables couleurs dues aux minéraux présents dans la roche, on n’avait jamais rien vu de tel.

The vegetation is quite interesting too, and we have plenty of opportunities to admire the famous New-Zealand fern (you know, the one on the All Blacks logo).

La végétation est intéressante elle aussi, et on a l’occasion d’admirer la célèbre fougère néo-zélandaise (vous savez, celle qui est sur le logo des All Blacks).

As we continue our journey towards the South, we follow the shore of Taupo lake.

En continuant notre voyage vers le sud, nous suivons la rive du lac Taupo.

And we end up in Tongariro national park.

Et nous finissons par arriver au parc national de Tongariro.

The next day, we go for a hike on the Tongariro alpine crossing, a famous cricuit taking us on the volcanoes. It’s impressive to see how everything is organized and marked for trekkers, there is little room for improvisation, but at least nature is really protected.

Le lendemain, on va marcher sur le Tongariro alpine crossing, un célèbre circuit qui nous amène sur les volcans. Tout est précisément organisé et balisé, c’est impressionnant, ça laisse peu de place à l’improvisation, mais au moins la nature est vraiment bien protégée.

The weather is unfortunately quite foggy, but luckily it gets better just when we reach the emerald lake.

Le temps est malheureusement couvert, mais heureusement ça s’arrange pile quand on arrive au lac d’émeraude.

The next day, the sun is back, and we can admire the volcano again…

Le lendemain, le soleil est de retour, et on peut à nouveau admirer le volcan…

We were told about the New-Zealand sheep and it’s true, there are quite a lot of them.

On nous avait parlé des moutons Néo-Zélandais, et ce n’est pas une légende, il y en a vraiment beaucoup.

On the way, we stop to visit the Southward car museum. They have, among other masterpieces, our former MG (the dark green one below).

Sur la route, on s’arrête pour visiter le musée de voitures de Southward. Ils ont, entre autres pièces de collection, notre ancienne MG (en vert foncé ci-dessous).

The ladies leave Guillaume and Xavier there to go for a walk on the beach.

Les dames abandonnent Guillaume et Xavier là-bas pour aller faire un tour à la plage.

We end our discovery of the Northern island by halting in Wellington, the capital city. We get a chance to see kiwis in the national museum. Apparently, it is very hard to see them in their natural environment because they go out at night and they are quite fearful.

Nous achevons notre découverte de l’île du Nord par une étape à Wellington, la capitale. Ceci nous donne l’occasion de voir des kiwis au musée national. Apparemment, c’est très difficile d’en voir dans leur environnement naturel car ils sortent la nuit et sont très craintifs.

To end on a high note, we are lucky to see many dolphins swimming around our ferry boat as we sail towards the Southern Island. There is more to come about New-Zealand in the next article, but after a few days in the North, we already love the country!

Pour finir en beauté, nous avons la chance de voir de nombreux dauphins nager autour de notre ferry sur le chemin de l’île du Sud. On n’en a pas fini avec la Nouvelle-Zélande, la suite arrive au prochain épisode, mais après ces quelques jours dans l’île du Nord nous sommes déjà séduits!
